The Honeypot Channel: A Spam Trap Bots Can't Resist

Self-bots and spam scripts post in every channel they can see. A honeypot channel turns that behaviour against them — real members read the pin and stay out, bots post and get auto-actioned instantly.

Spam bots don't read. They join a server, enumerate every channel they can post in, and blast their message everywhere. Human members do the opposite — they glance at a channel, read the description, and move on. A honeypot channel weaponises that difference.

The idea in one sentence

Create a channel that clearly tells humans "do not post here" — and auto-action anyone who posts anyway. A real member reads the warning and leaves it alone. A bot that spams every channel walks straight into it and gets caught on its very first message, often before it reaches your real channels.

How CloudMod runs it

You designate a channel as the honeypot and choose what happens when someone posts in it: ban, kick, timeout or quarantine (strip them to a restricted role for review). The moment a message lands there, CloudMod takes that action and logs it. No moderator has to be watching.

Quarantine when you want a second look

If you'd rather not auto-ban outright, quarantine is the gentle option: the poster is moved to a restricted role and removed from the rest of the server until a human checks. It catches the bot without permanently punishing the rare real member who ignored the sign.

Make the trap obvious to humans

The whole trick depends on humans knowing to stay out. Give the channel an unmistakable name and pin a short, blunt message — "⚠️ Do not post in this channel. Posting here results in an automatic ban." Place it somewhere visible enough that bots find it but framed clearly enough that people don't.

Part of a layered defense

A honeypot catches the auto-posting spam scripts; Scam Guard catches compromised accounts that mass-ping and flood; the account-age filter catches throwaway joins; the word filter catches bad text. Running them together closes the gaps any single tool leaves open — and network-wide bans mean one catch protects every server in your network.

Getting-started tip

Start with quarantine or timeout as the action while you confirm the channel is set up the way you expect, then switch to ban once you trust it. Give the bot Ban Members, Kick Members, Moderate Members, Manage Roles and Manage Messages so every option works.
